Woman alleges medical errors in connection with childbirth

Medical malpractice 05

CHICAGO — A baby's mother is suing Dr. Joy Beth West; Joy B. West, M.D., S.C.; Calumet Physicians Associates Ltd; and Roseland Community Hospital Association, d/b/a Roseland Community Hospital, alleging negligence in medical care in connection with childbirth.

Tara Lewis, individually and as parent of Ta'Nilya Baker, a minor, filed a complaint on Aug. 4 in Cook County Circuit Court against the defendants, alleging that they failed to properly evaluate the plaintiff's condition as well as that of her unborn child.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that in January 2015, she sustained physical injuries and injuries to her child, including the child being diagnosed with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy. The plaintiff holds the defendants responsible because they allegedly failed to consider that the plaintiff needed to deliver her child via a cesarean section.

The plaintiff seeks judgment against the defendants in an amount in excess of $50,000. She is represented by Devon C. Bruce of Power, Rogers & Smith in Chicago.
