Woman alleges arm had to be amputated after negligent shoulder surgery

Medical malpractice 04

CHICAGO – A Cook County woman claims her left arm was amputated because of improper surgical procedures.

Linda Griffin filed a complaint on Nov. 16 in Cook County Circuit Court against The University of Chicago Medical Center and physicians Daniel P. Mass, M.D. and Anna L. Avik, D.O.,  alleging negligence.

According to the complaint, the plaintiff alleges that she underwent shoulder replacement surgery in November 2014, but during the surgery her axillary artery was cut, eventually leading to amputation of her left arm in March 2015.

The plaintiff holds hospital and doctors responsible because the defendants allegedly performed a surgical procedure on plaintiff without properly examining and assessing the plaintiff, performed improper surgical procedures, and negligently failed to protect the axillary artery during surgery.

The plaintiff seeks judgment against the defendants in an amount of more than $50,000 plus court costs. She is represented by Charles A. Hornewer of Hornewer Law Firm, LLC in Chicago.
