CHICAGO — The Chicago Sun-Times and independent journalists Brandon Smith, George Joseph and Jamie Kalvenand are suing the Chicago Police Department and the city of Chicago, alleging violation of state and federal law.

The plaintiffs filed a complaint on June 7 in Cook County Circuit Court against the defendants alleging they were denied access to public records, in violation of the Freedom of Information Act.

The plaintiffs had requested information related to the CPD's creation of a "Strategic Subject List" or "heat list," a "controversial computerized prediction of people allegedly likely to be a victim or perpetrator of gun violence."

The plaintiffs seek for the defendant to produce the requested documents, civil penalties, court costs and any further relief this court grants. They are represented by Matthew Topic and Joshua Burday of Loevy & Loevy in Chicago.
