Airline passenger blames Chicago, escalator companies for fall at O'Hare

By Bree Gonzales | Jun 29, 2018

CHICAGO — An airline passenger is suing the City of Chicago, United Maintenance Co., Schindler Elevator Corp. and Schindler Enterprises, citing alleged negligence in maintaining the safety of an escalator at O'Hare International Airport.

Ivy Wells filed a complaint June 21 in Cook County Circuit Court, alleging that the defendants did not properly assess the condition of an escalator in Terminal One.

According to the complaint, Wells was on the escalator on July 15, 2017, when she slipped on a water spill, causing her to fall down the escalator and onto the concrete floor. The plaintiff claims she suffered bodily injuries, incurred medical expenses and lost work time and wages as a result of the alleged fall.

The plaintiff said the defendants are responsible because they allegedly failed to inspect, maintain and ensure the safeness of their escalators and failed to warn riders about the hazardous condition.

Wells requests a trial by jury and seeks an amount in excess of $50,000, plus costs of the action and other amounts deemed just and proper. She is represented by Jason Sherwood of Sherwood Law Group LLC in Chicago.
