A Chicago federal judge has ruled Commonwealth Edison should be reimbursed for its legal bills in fending off an allegedly inept patent infringement lawsuit concerning smart meters, but the judge still faulted the utility giant for its own conduct in the case.

Fitbit and Fitbug, two leading competing manufacturers of activity-tracking electronic devices, might be headed for trial after a federal judge rejected Fitbug’s request for summary judgment in a pending patent lawsuit. The matter dates to Feb. 20, 2014, when Fitbit sued Fitbug alleging a single count of patent infringement.

The owner of a now-shuttered music venue in Chicago's Logan Square neighborhood and other associated defendants have dodged allegations of racketeering after a federal judge determined the accusations against them don't meet the legal criteria needed to demonstrate they may have violated federal racketeering law.
