A Granite City woman has sued a food market for injuries she allegedly suffered in a fall on a wet mat.
Sheila Daughtery, of Granite City, filed a lawsuit May 18 in Madison County Circuit Court against Luesse Groceries Inc., and Jim Luesse, doing business as Leroy's A and J Market, citing premises liability and negligence.
According to the complaint, on Jan. 8, 2014, Daughtery was at the defendant market, at 4089 Pontoon Road, Granite City, when she
slipped and fell on an "unnatural accumulation of liquid ... in front of the counter."
The defendants are cited with failing to: inspect the premises; remedy a dangerous condition; warn the plaintiff about it; provide slip-resistant surfaces; keep mats from becoming saturated with liquid; repair a roof that was leaking fluid onto the floor inside; and inspect and train employees to ensure compliance with safety standards.
The suit says Daughtery sustained injury, pain and suffering, and medical expense.
Daugherty seeks damages in excess of $200,000, plus costs. She is represented by attorney John C. Webster of Williamson, Webster, Falb & Glisson in Alton.
