Customer alleges Hyundai was lemon

A customer is suing a Hyundai dealership for the return of his money spent on Sonata that was allegedly a lemon.

Derrick Smith filed a lawsuit June 1 in Cook County Circuit Court against Hyundai Motor America, Ed Napleton Calumet City and Hyundai Capital America.

According to the complaint, on Nov. 28, 2014, Smith bought a new 2015 Hyundai Sonata from Napleton Hyundai. On May 5, the suit says, Smith notified the dealership he was revoking acceptance of the Sonata, alleging the vehicle's alternator wiring harness was too close to the intake manifold, resulting in chronic short-circuiting of the electrical system.

Smith seeks refund of the money spent on the vehicle and repairs, $30,000, plus court costs. He is represented by attorney Dwight A. White of The Law Offices of Dwight A. White in Chicago.

Cook County Circuit Court case number 2015L005491.
