A couple is four suing doctors and local medical groups, alleging malpractice in the husband's treatment at a La Grange hospital.
Frank and Suzanne Mazgay filed a Lawsuit May 11 in Cook County Circuit Court against: Dr. Iram Shaikh-Abbasi; Dr. William B. Frymark Jr.; Dr. Agnieszka Piotrowski; Dr. Robert M. Lee; and Dr. Tamara Jackson; and Family Medical Group of La Grange, Adventist Health Partners Inc.; Adventist Midwest Health; Hinsdale Gastroenterology Associates; and Suburban Radiologists.
According to the complaint, on May 9, 2013, Frank Mazgay went to Family Medical Group in La Grange to treat his persistent fatigue, epigastric pain, severe upper abdominal pain, elevated white blood cell count and nausea. The suit says he received various tests and the next day, he underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy with fluorocholangiography. He was released from La Grange Memorial Hospital diagnosed with acute cholecystitis and pancreatitis, the suit says.
On Aug. 27, 2014, he returned to the hospital with upper right quadrant pain and mass and was diagnosed with a hepatocellular carcinoma with abdominal wall matastasis, according to the suit.
The suit says the defendants failed to: order the appropriate follow-up testing; refer the plaintiff to the appropriate doctor; property treat his condition; order appropriate testing before and after the May 10, 2013, surgery; obtain liver function tests and hepatitis virus screening; and follow up with the patient after the surgery.
As a result, the lawsuit states, Frank Mazgay suffered severe and permanent injuries, pain and suffering, loss of a normal life and medical expense.
The Mazgays (his wife for loss of consortium) seek damages in excess of the court's jurisdictional limits, plus court costs. The plaintiffs are represented by attorney Michael J. Peterson of the Law Offices of Stephanie K. Nathanson in Chicago.
