Laborer alleges asbestos-related illness

A former fork lift operator is suing over exposure to asbestos that allegedly made him ill.

James L. Lewis filed a complaint on May 18 in Cook County Circuit Court against dozens of businesses, alleging product liability and secondary exposure.

According to the complaint, from 1966 to 1989, Lewis worked as a laborer and fork lift operator at various locations, where he was exposed to asbestos-containing products made, sold, marketed, distributed or used by the defendants. As a result, the lawsuit states, he was diagnosed with the asbestos-caused illness asbestosis with impairment Aug. 17, 2013.

Lewis seeks damages in excess of the court's jurisdictional limit and court costs. He is represented by attorney Matthew J. Adair of Cooney and Conway in Chicago.
