The estate of a Cook County woman is suing an ambulance business after an accident allegedly killed a woman when she was thrown off a moving stretcher and propelled headfirst into a brick wall.
Guadalupe Velasquez, as administrator for the estate of Maria Castillo, filed a suit June 24 in Cook County Circuit Court against Advantage Ambulance of Chicago, alleging professional negligence in the 2013 accident.
According to the complaint, on Aug. 12, 2013, Castillo was killed as a proximate result of an accident when an Advantage employee wheeling her on a stretcher accidentally knocked the stretcher over, throwing Castillo headfirst into a brick wall and then onto the ground. The suit states the defendants were negligent by moving the woman’s stretcher off the sidewalk, overturning it and throwing her into the wall.
The lawsuit states only one staffer was in attendance and that he transported the patient without looking at either the stretcher or the sidewalk. The suit states Castillo died of her injuries Sept. 29, 2013.
The plaintiff alleges negligence, wrongful death and res ipsa loquitor. The suit further maintains that Castillo endured pain, impairment, disability and extra medical expenses.
Velasquez seeks damages in excess of $50,000, plus attorney fees and costs. She is represented by attorney Charles Cannon of Mahoney Crowe & Goldrick in Chicago.
