Man's estate sues nursing home for alleged neglect

A man's estate is suing a nursing home based on allegedly neglectful treatment before his death.

Ebonie Moore, as administrator of the estate of George Cammon, filed a complaint June 24 in Cook County Circuit Court against Countryside Nursing and Rehabilitation Center LLC, doing business as Countryside Nursing and Rehab Center.

In 2011, Cammon was admitted to Countryside with a risk for falls and developing ulcers due to his Alzheimer's disease. During 2012, he became dehydrated several times, the lawsuit states. In 2014, he fell, striking his head -- an incident that required stitches at St. Margaret's Hospital, the lawsuit states.

Also in 2014, he became malnourished, and in August, developed a pressure ulcer on his right buttocks and coccyx, which went to stage IV and required debridement. Ultimately, as a result of these incidents, the lawsuit states, his physical and mental condition declined, which led to injuries, pain and suffering, disability and disfigurement just before his death on Sept. 6, 2014.

The defendant is cited with failing to properly access the plaintiff's condition, properly develop a care plan, regularly assess the changes in his condition, provide adequate assisting devices, adequately supervise him, train and supervise staff, update his care plan, and maintain and institute safety standards.

The plaintiff, citing violations of the Nursing Home Care Act and Wrongful Death Act and Survival Act, seeks damages in excess of $150,000, plus costs.

The plaintiff is represented by David M. Resis of the Law Offices of Steven J. Malman and Associates in Chicago.

Cook County Circuit Court case number 2015L006468.
