Former electrician blames businesses for asbestos-related disease

A former electrician is suing the businesses he alleges caused his asbestos-related disease.

Richard N. Johnson filed a complaint June 11 in Cook County Circuit Court against dozens of businesses he alleges brought asbestos to the United States.

According to the complaint, from 1958 to 1979, Johnson worked as an electrician at various locations where asbestos-containing materials were being made, used, shipped, distributed or marketed by the defendants. As a result, the suit says, on Oct. 4, 2013, Johnson learned that he'd contracted an asbestos-related condition, esophageal cancer.

The plaintiff alleges his life has been forever changed and he will endure medical expenses, and pain and suffering.

Johnson seeks seeks unspecified damages in excess of the court's jurisdictional limit. He is represented by attorney David O. Barrett of Cooney and Conway in Chicago.

Cook County Circuit Court case number 2015L005939.
