A Chicago hospital and nursing home have been sued for negligence.
Debra Murry, as independent administrator of the late Lena Hill’s estate, filed her suit July 9 in the Cook County Circuit Court against Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center and Lakeview Nursing and Rehabilitation Centre Inc.
The two-count complaint alleges negligence under the state’s Survival and Nursing Home acts. Murry seeks a judgment of more than $50,000 against each of the defendants.
In her suit, Murry asserts that Hill was a patient at the Masonic Medical Center on July 21, 2011 and resident at Lakeview’s nursing home on July 22, 2011, at which time she was at high risk for developing decubitus ulcers, also known as bed or pressure sores.
She claims that the hospital knew or should have known Hill carried that risk and failed to provide appropriate skin care and reposition Hill to prevent these ulcers from developing or worsening.
In the suit’s count against the nursing home, Murry asserts that Lakeview violated its obligation not to abuse or neglect its residents under Illinois’ Nursing Home Act when it failed to reposition Hill to prevent these ulcers and treat her sores once they developed.
As a result of the hospital and nursing home’s alleged negligence, Murry claims that Hill, who died on Sept. 1, 2011, suffered injuries.
Matthew I. Baker, an associate at Sandman, Levy and Petrich in Chicago, filed the suit on Murry’s behalf.
