Nursing home sued over woman's death

Machado

The family of a woman who died in a nursing home is suing over claims of negligence and wrongful death.

Vilma Rivera Lopez, as special administrator of the Estate of Zoila H. Rivera, filed a lawsuit Dec. 16 in the Cook County Circuit Court against The Renaissance at Midway Inc.

According to the complaint, Rivera died on on Jan. 22, 2012 from avoidable medical complications. Lopez claims the nursing home violated the Nursing Home Care Act when it failed to prevent infection of sacral ulcers, sepsis, osteomyelitis, Clostridium difficile infection and failed to transfer Rivera to an acute care facility in a timely manner.

Lopez is seeking more than $50,000 in damages. She is being represented in the case by attorney Emilio E. Machado of Rubin, Machado & Rosenblum Ltd.
