Elevator free fall leads to lawsuit

Otiselevator

Juana Herrera filed a lawsuit Oct. 18 in the Cook County Circuit Court against Otis Elevator Co. over alleged injuries sustained when an elevator in which she was riding free fell in August 2012.

According to the suit, Herrera was injured while riding the elevator, maintained and controlled by Otis, when it was caused to free fall from the 24th floor to the 10th floor.

She claims she was working at The Marriott Hotel at 540 N. Michigan Ave. in Chicago when the accident occurred. Herrera alleges she sustained serious injuries and missed work following the incident.

Herrera claims Otis was negligent in maintaining the elevator in a safe condition and she now seeks to hold them liable for her injuries.

She is seeking more than $50,000 in damages. She is being represented by Chicago attorney Mark A. Bazzanella.
