Couple sues Rush medical centers, doctors over surgery

Scales

A couple is suing a group of physicians and a medical facility over allegations the wife had complications following surgery.

Nirmala and Ram Basavatia filed a medical malpractice lawsuit Feb. 3 in the Cook County Circuit Court against Rush University Medical Center, Midwest Orthopeadics at Rush LLC, Johnston R. Bowman Health Center and Drs. Richard Berger, Robert Mayle, Sameer Lodha, Duke Yim, Sanjai Shukla, Debdut Biswas, Shannon Zielsdorf, Robert March, Gilberto Zavala and Andrew Riff.

The plaintiffs claim that Nirmala received negligent care when she was a patient of the defendants at 1653 W. Congress Parkway and 710 S. Paulina St. in Chicago from Feb. 3, 2012 to Feb. 24, 2012.

According to the complaint, the defendants performed surgery on Nirmala and didn't protect blood vessels, used the wrong prosthetic and improperly placed the prosthetic, causing an injured artery, nerve damage and other injuries.

The couple is seeking damages in excess of $50,000 from each defendant and court costs. The suit also includes a count for loss of consortium from Nirmala's husband, Ram.

They are being represented by John J. MacInerney of Hofeld and Schaffner in Chicago.
