St. Alexius Medical Center accused of negligence in man's pulmonary embolism

A couple is suing the man's medical care providers, claiming they acted negligently when he was suffering from a pulmonary embolism.

William O'Brien and Susan O'Brien filed a lawsuit March 28 in the Cook County Circuit Court against St. Alexius Medical Center, Alexian Brothers Health System, Dr. John McConnell and Dr. Jitendra Patel, citing negligence and loss of consortium.

The complaint states William O'Brien was a patient of the defendants on April, 11, 2010, when he was suffering from a pulmonary embolism. He claims the defendants committed numerous acts of negligence while he was a patient, including prescribing medications that were contraindicated and failing to order appropriate tests and properly treat him.

The plaintiffs are seeking more than $50,000 in damages and are being represented in the case by John J. Maclnemey of Hofeld and Schaffner.
