A Pennsylvania woman is suing the manufacturers and distributors of a gel intended to provide men a boost of testosterone, claiming her husband died after using the drug.
Lesa M. Young, individually and as special administrator of the Estate of David R. Young, filed a lawsuit April 18 in the Cook County Circuit Court against Abbott Laboratories Inc., and AbbVie Inc., as well as several unnamed drug distributors, companies and health providers, citing wrongful death and product liability.
According to the complaint, David used AndroGel until his April 21, 2012 death from sudden cardiac arrest. Young claims her husband did not have any heart, cardiovascular, or blood cot issues prior to using the testosterone drug.
She claims AndroGel has been proven to increase risk of heart attack, stroke, or death, but aggressive advertising campaigns failed to make the risks clear or provide adequate warnings.
Young is not the first person to sue over AndroGel. A request to consolidate more than three dozen federal lawsuits over the drug, many of which were filed in the Northern District of Illinois, has been made to the U.S. Panel on Multidistrict Litigation.
Young is seeking more than $50,000 in damages and is being represented by attorneys Peter J. Flowers of Meyers & Flowers LLC and Edward Blizzard of Blizzard & Nabers LLP.
