Former Stateville inmate accuses medical providers of negligence that led to alleged blindness

Olmstead

A former inmate of Stateville Correctional Center is suing a group of healthcare providers and professionals, claiming his eye condition worsened during his time behind bars.

Arthur Donaldson filed a lawsuit May 2 in the Cook County Circuit Court against Wexford Health Sources Inc., Health Professionals Ltd., Associated Ophthalmologists S.C., Dr. Jason Dunn, individually and as an employee of Wexford Health Sources, and Dr. Aras Zlioba, individually and as an employee of Associated Ophthalmologists, as well as other physicians and nurses of the defendant companies.

According to the suit, Donaldson was incarcerated at the correctional facility in Joliet from May 4, 2012 until Aug. 24, 2012. He claims he has suffered from glaucoma for the past seven years and despite informing the defendants he needed certain medications to prevent the disease from advancing, was not provided with them.

The suit alleges as a result of the defendants not giving him the medication, Donaldson began noticing a loss of vision on June 13, 2012, and was legally blind by the time he was released from Stateville..

Donaldson is seeking damages in excess of $50,000, as well as court costs, and is being represented in the case by Chicago attorney Gregory J. Olmstead of The Deratany Firm.
