Customer slams grocery store with suit, claims freezer door fell on him

A man is suing a Chicago grocery store, claiming a freezer door came off its hinges and fell on him.

Troy Smith filed a lawsuit May 23 in the Cook County Circuit Court against Kamal Chebli, doing business as Kamal Grocery Store, Chebli Food Store Inc., Munir S. Fakhouri and Caramel Grocery Store, citing premises liability.

According to the complaint, Smith was at the defendants' premises on South Ashland Avenue in Chicago on May 27, 2012, when a freezer door came off its hinges and fell on him, causing injuries.

He accuses the defendants of failing to maintain the premises or warn customers of the defect.

Smith is seeking more than $50,000 in damages and is being represented in the case by attorney Benjamin B. Kelly of The Vrdolyak Law Group LLC.
