Woman files suit against nursing home, lift manufacturer over spinal fracture

Nathanson

A woman is suing a Richton Park nursing home and the manufacturer of a lift, claiming she sustained a spinal compression fracture after falling to the floor when the lift's sling broke.

Lena Richard Bey filed a lawsuit May 16 in the Cook County Circuit Court against Glenshire Nursing and Rehabilitation Centre Ltd. and Joerns Healthcare LLC, alleging strict liability, negligence and violations of the Illinois Nursing Home Care Act.

According to the complaint, Bey was a resident of Glenshire and at risk for falls on May 18, 2012, when the nursing home staff used a lift manufactured by Joerns to transferring her from bed to a wheelchair.

Bey claims the sling broke and she dropped to the floor, causing a spinal compression fracture that required a spinal fusion.

Bey is seeking more than $50,000 in damages and is being represented in the case by attorneys Stephanie K. Nathanson and Michael T. Peterson of the Law Offices of Stephanie K. Nathanson.
