Heart surgery patient accuses University of Chicago Medical Center, doctors of negligence; case voluntarily dismissed by plaintiff

A man is suing over claims he was injured and lost vital signs for several minutes during heart surgery.

Michael Webb and Irene Smith filed a lawsuit July 15 in the Cook County Circuit Court against The University of Chicago Medical Center, The University of Chicago, doing business as The University of Chicago Physicians Group, and Drs. Hemal M. Nayak and Harshal Sheth, alleging medical negligence.

According to the complaint, Webb underwent surgery for the removal of an implantable cardiac defibrillator on July 19, 2012 at The University of Chicago Medical Center. Sheth, performed the surgery, under the supervision of Nayak, the suit states.

The couple claims Webb sustained a tear in his heart wall during the operation, lost all vital signs for several minutes and still suffers debilitating effects.

The suit accuses the defendants of negligence and also includes a count for loss of consortium on behalf of Webb's wife, Smith.

Webb and Smith are seeking more than $50,000 in damages and are being represented in the case by attorneys at Susan E. Loggans Associates P.C. in Chicago.
