Patient blames Blue Island Hospital Co., doctors for post-surgery injuries

A Cook County woman is suing over claims her shoulder was injured during surgery.

Mary Doorneweerd filed a lawsuit Aug. 22 in the Cook County Circuit Court against Blue Island Hospital Company LLC, doing business as Metrosouth Medical Center, and Drs. Ramon Manglano and Hassan Shakir, alleging medical negligence.

According to the complaint, Doorneweerd underwent surgery by Manglano at Metrosouth Medical Center on Aug. 23, 2012, and Shakir administered the anesthesia. Doorneweerd claims when she woke up after from the procedure, she had sustained injuries to her shoulder and arm due to the positioning of her body during the surgery.

She accuses the defendants of negligence in failing to properly position her and pad her arm to prevent injuries.

Doorneweerd is seeking more than $50,000 in damages and is being represented in the case by Charles V. Falkenberg III of Karlin, Fleisher & Falkenberg LLC in Chicago.
