A man is suing over claims his father's death was caused by a negligently placed endotracheal tube in the emergency room of an Arlington Heights hospital.

Gino Rago, as the special administrator of the estate of Floriano Rago, filed a wrongful death lawsuit Oct. 29 in Cook County Circuit Court against Northwest Community Hospital, Dr. David E. Mahon and Advanced Surgical Associates.

According to the complaint, Floriano arrived at Northwest Community Hospital in respiratory distress on May 6, 2011, when he came under the care of Mahon and other emergency room staff. Rago claims Floriano elected to be intubated for a lymph node biopsy, but then became ashen, short of breath and unresponsive, requiring reintubation.

Rago says Floriano died on May 10, 2011 and accuses the defendants of failing to recognize and treat his father's life-threatening condition of respiratory distress and inappropriately placing an endotracheal tube such that it caused a collapsed lung.

Rago is seeking more than $30,000 in damages and is represented by attorney Corey E. Meyer of the Law Offices of Meyer & Blumenshine in Chicago.
