Chicago woman files class action suit alleging violations of city's landlord, tenant ordinance

Lease 150x150

A woman has filed a class action lawsuit that accuses a leasing company of violating the city's residential landlord and tenant ordinance.

June Harris filed suit late last month in Cook County Circuit Court against Leasing and Management Company Inc. and Community Housing Partners XI LP.

According to the complaint, Harris in October 2011 entered into a written leasing agreement with the defendant for the rental of a residence in the 900 Block of West Wilson Avenue in Chicago. The term commenced Nov. 1, 2011 with rent set at $567 and a security deposit of $306, according to the suit.

Each year, Harris claims, she renewed her lease and the defendant didn't include the name and address of the financial institution of where the security payment was deposited, a violation of the city's rental ordinance.

Among other alleged violations, Harris further claims in her Dec. 29 lawsuit that the defendant held her deposit, causing her not to receive the interest on her security deposit as the ordinance requires.

Harris is represented by attorneys at JS Law in Chicago.
