Sidewalk fall spurs suit against city

The city is facing a lawsuit from a man who claims a sidewalk in disrepair caused him to fall.

Daniel Stone sued the City of Chicago on Feb. 4 in the Cook County Circuit Court over a Feb. 28, 2014 incident, in which he alleges he fell on a city-owned sidewalk on West North Avenue between Leavitt and Hoyne streets.

The sidewalk, the suit states, was carelessly and negligently maintained and in a state of disrepair that created a dangerous and hazardous condition.

Stone accuses the city of failing to institute a system of inspections to determine if a sidewalk was in disrepair and not repairing or replacing the dangerous condition when they knew or should have known it existed.

As a result of the city's alleged negligence, Stone contends he fell and sustained serious injuries. He is seeking at least $50,000 in damages and is represented by Richard P. Nilson of Nilson Stookal Gleason & Caputo Ltd. in Chicago.
