A patron of a Morton Grove bar is suing over claims the owners' careless maintenance of the establishment caused her to fall down the stairs and sustain injuries.
Lauretta Burke filed suit March 11 in Cook County Circuit Court against North & South Side Inc. and Cal-Oak Inc., individually and doing business as Bringer Inn, alleging careless maintenance.
According to the complaint, North & South Side owns and manages the Bringer Inn, at 6230 Lincoln Ave. in Morton Grove, where Burke fell on March 15, 2013 while exiting the premises on the rear or side stairway.
The suit says the defendants failed to provide a landing on each side of the threshold that conformed to building code, neglected to install a functional handrail, did not properly illuminate the stairwell or warn patrons of the hazardous condition of the change in vertical elevation beyond the the door's exterior.
The plaintiff alleges the proprietors also failed to inspect and repair the area and that she sustained both internal and external injuries in her fall, leading to medical expenses, pain and suffering.
Burke seeks more than $50,000 in damages, plus attorney fees and costs, and is represented by attorney Scott D. DeSalvo of The Law Office of Scott D. DeSalvo in Chicago.
