Man's estate sues long-term care facility, alleges unnecessary death

A Cook County man's estate has sued over the long-term care he received leading up to his death.

Claudette Williams, as administrator of the estate of August Jones Jr., filed suit May 6 in Cook County Circuit Court against Manor Care of Oak Lawn (East), doing business as Manorcare Health Services-Oak Lawn East,; nurse Jennifer Benco; and Concord Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

According to the complaint, on Feb. 4, 2014, Jones died while under the care of the the defendants. On Dec. 13, 2013, the suit states, Jones underwent surgery at Trinity Hospital for a debridement of a sacral pressure ulcer, and then again Jan. 10, 2014, at South Shore Hospital to address another ulcer.

Under the defendant's care, the lawsuit states, Jones encountered "an overall deterioration of his physical, mental and psychosocial well-being, a poor quality of life, the development and deterioration of multiple pressure ulcers, including but not limited to, an unstageable sacral pressure ulcer, which became infected and required multiple surgical debridements and hospitalization, all of which caused and contributed to cause his death."

Williams seeks damages of more than $400,000, plus costs. She is is represented by attorneys Daniel A. Goldfaden, Cari F. Silverman and John J. Perconti, of Levin and Perconti in Chicago.
