A customer is suing a defunct used furniture store and its former owner, alleging she was injured after falling down the stairs in the establishment.
Jacqueline Thomas filed a lawsuit Aug. 6 in Cook County Circuit Court against Perez Used Hotel Furniture Inc., and Angel Perez, proprietor, alleging negligence.
According to the complaint, on June 28, 2014, the defendants operated the furniture store at 332 E. Saul Trail, South Chicago Heights. The suit says although the Illinois secretary of state declared Perez Used Hotel Furniture involuntarily dissolved Jan. 10, 2014, Thomas was doing business there June 28, 2014, at which time she was coming down the stairs from the second floor and slipped on the steps and wasn't able to catch herself before falling.
The suit states the defendants were negligent in failing to have uniform treads and risers on the stairs, have usable handrails, inspect the steps, and follow building codes with respect to treads, risers and handrails.
As a result, the suit says, the plaintiff sustained injuries, pain and suffering, and medical expenses.
Thomas seeks damages of more than $50,000, plus costs. She is represented by attorney David M. Sternberg of Sachs, Earnest & Associates in Chicago.
