Bicyclist blames cab driver for accident

A bicyclist is suing a cab driver and car company, alleging injuries from an accident in a bike lane.

Kevin Rieg filed a lawsuit Aug. 3 in Cook County Circuit Court against Kamil Chatur and 5 Star Flash Inc., alleging negligence and carelessness.

According to the complaint, on Aug. 5, 2014, Rieg was riding his bicycle southeast near the 830 block of North Milwaukee Avenue in Chicago and Chatur was driving a cab owned by the other defendant in the same place and direction. The suit says

after Chatur pulled over, a passenger of in his cab opened a door, which hit Rieg and caused him injuries, pain and suffering and medical expenses.

The lawsuit states the defendants were negligent and careless for operating or owning a vehicle that caused Rieg injury, letting the passenger open a door into traffic, and failing to use due caution, discharge passengers at the curb and stay clear of the bike lane.

Rieg seeks damages of more than $100,000, plus costs. He is represented by the Freeman Kevenides Law Firm of Chicago.
