A Cook County woman is suing nursing home Alden of Waterford Rehabilitation and Health Care Center, alleging negligence by its staff led to the death of a 78-year-old woman.

Ruby Pollard, administrator of the estate of Callie McMichael, filed suit in Cook County Circuit Court on July 31 against Alden of Waterford Rehabilitation and Health Care Center and four of its workers: Nora O’Gorman, Tracy Pell, Nancy Kazmierski and Binu George. The suit claims negligence on the part of the defendants led to McMichael’s death.

From Jan. 3 to Feb. 13, 2014, McMichael was a resident of Alden of Waterford. During that time, the plaintiff claims McMichael’s pressure sores deteriorated, grew larger and became infected. On Jan. 13, McMichael was sent to Edwards Hospital for treatment of the ulcers. Surgery was performed on her at the hospital on Jan. 18. However, the lawsuit claims lack of prompt treatment caused McMichael to develop sepsis, ultimately causing her death on Feb. 13.

Attorneys Susan L. Novosad, Colleen M. Mixam and Daniel A. Goldfaden of the Chicago law firm of Levin & Perconti are representing the plaintiff. The suit seeks damages against the defendants of more than $50,000 plus court costs.
