Daughter sues DuPage Medical Group, alleging father's cancer misdiagnosed

Bowel obstruction

A Cook County woman is suing a DuPage County medical practice, alleging malpractice related to her father’s death.

Edvyna Valkiunas, independent executor of the estate of John Valkiunas, filed a lawsuit Oct. 9 in Cook County Circuit Court against Dr. Mary Kungl and DuPage Medical Group.

According to the lawsuit, John Valkiunas was misdiagnosed for stomach pains that later turned out to be caused by liver cancer. Between June 2012 and February 2013, Valkiunas saw Kungl for his symptoms, the suit says.

The lawsuit states Kungl failed to correctly interpret a urine test in January 2013 and did not refer him to a specialist. Valkiunas died in February 2014 after his liver was damaged during an operation to resection the bowel, the suit says.

Edvyna Valkiunas seeks damages of more than $50,000. She is represented by attorney Terrance M. Quinn of Phillips Law Offices in Chicago.

Cook County Circuit Court case number 2015-L-010346.
