By Robert Hadley | Oct 22, 2015

A Cook County man is suing the owner of a Chicago apartment building, alleging violation of safety laws led to a fatal fire.

Daniel Ryan, special administrator of the estate of Shirley Ryan, filed a lawsuit Oct. 19 in Cook County Circuit Court against Venistano Chavez, alleging negligence.

The complaint states Shirley Ryan, mother of Daniel Ryan, died Dec. 2, 2014, in a fire that broke out in her apartment in the defendant's building on 5252 W. Melrose Ave., Chicago. The suit alleges Chavez was negligent by failing to install working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, not providing a working fire extinguisher and overlooking other safety procedures.

Ryan seeks damages of more than $50,000, plus costs of suit. He is represented by attorney Bart J. Galvin of Winters Salzetta O’Brien & Richardson in Chicago.

Cook County Circuit Court case number 2015-L-010605.
