A Cook County woman is suing a doctor and a Chicago hospital, alleging malpractice in the death of her newborn child.

Sheba Houskin, individually and as special administrator of the estate of Emmanuel Deon Reeves, filed a lawsuit Oct. 9 in Cook County Circuit Court against Dr. Kalpana Singh and Sinai Health System, doing business as Mt. Sinai Hospital.

According to the complaint, Houskin came to Mt. Sinai Hospital in August to deliver her baby, Emmanual Deon Reeves. The suit says after a drug was given to induce labor, the baby began showing a declining heart rate and other signs of distress.

The next day, the lawsuit states, Singh attempted to deliver the baby but when the infant became stuck, an emergency C-section was performed. During the course of the operation, the baby died.

The plaintiff alleges the defendants’ negligence led to her child’s death.

Houskin seeks a jury trial and damages of more than $50,000. She is represented by attorneys Jack Beam and Matthew M. Patterson of Beam and Raymond in Chicago.

Cook County Circuit Court case number 2015-L-010348.
