Family accues Jackson Park doctor of negligence in patient’s death

Knee surgery

A Cook County woman is suing a doctor, his medical practice and a hospital, alleging her relative’s caregivers failed to administer the proper medication, resulting in her death.

Lillie Brown, special administrator of the estate of Annie Brown Williams, filed a lawsuit Aug. 17 in Cook County Circuit Court against Dr. Rajiv Kandala and his medical practice, Jackson Park Hospital, Jackson Park Hospital and Medical Center, and Jackson Park Hospital Foundation. Named as respondents in recovery are Dr. Syed Ali and Dr. Daniel Ivankovich.

According to the complaint, on Sept. 4, 2013, after Williams underwent surgery at Jackson Park Hospital in Chicago for a broken right femur, she was not given the medication that Ivankovich, her surgeron, had ordered. The suit says Kandala, Williams’ attending physician after the operation, failed to administer heparin every eight hours, leading to Williams’ death from a pulmonary embolism caused by deep vein thrombosis of the leg Sept. 18, 2013.

Brown seeks damages of more than $50,000. She is represented by attorney Evan Smola of Hurley McKenna & Mertz of Chicago.

Cook County Circuit Court case number 2015-L008386.
