Patient says Swedish Covenant, doctors guilty of botched bunion surgery

Toe surgery

A Cook County woman is suing a hospital and doctors, alleging negligence when they treated an infected post-operative wound on her toe.

Susan Routt filed a lawsuit Aug. 21 in Cook County Circuit Court against Dr. Jaroslaw B. Dzwinyk, Dr. Theodore Polos, Dr. Leonid I. Zester, Swedish Covenant Hospital, Swedish Covenant Management Services Inc., Swedish Coventant Management Services Inc. doing business as Swedish Covenant Medical Group and Comprehensive Podiatric Medical Services.

According to the complaint, Routt developed a necrotic wound that failed to heal properly after a Feb. 7, 2013, bunionectomy on her left great toe. Despite months of wound treatment by the defendants, the suit says Routt developed MRSA, septic shock and renal failure, sending her to the hospital several times in June and July 2013.

In August 2013, the lawsuit states that doctors discovered that two compression screws installed during the initial surgery in February were causing the infections. The suit blames the defendants for misdiagnosis the cause of her illness and infection.

Routt seeks damages of more than $50,000, plus litigation costs. She is represented by attorney Ryan M. Griffin of Goldstein, Bender & Romanoff of Chicago.

Cook County Circuit Court case number 2015-L008617.
