Mother blames Little Company of Mary for daughter’s tonsillectomy death

CHICAGO–A Cook County woman is suing an Evergreen Park hospital and several doctors and nurses, alleging a morphine overdose caused her daughter to die while recovering from a tonsillectomy.

Melissa Serviss, independent administrator of the estate of Mackenzie Serviss filed a lawsuit Nov. 23 in Cook County Circuit Court against Little Company of Mary Hospital and Health Care Centers, Dr. Veena Bharme, registered nurses Jill Luzzi and Lynn Spanczak, Dr. Nirav Thakkar, Century Ear, Nose, Throat – Head and Neck Surgery Associates, Dr. Jarema Skirnyk and Evergreen Anesthesia & Pain Management Services. The suit alleges medical malpractice and wrongful death.

According to the complaint, Mackenzie Serviss was given an overdose of morphine April 7 after surgery to remove her tonsils and adenoids and to relieve pressure on her eardrums. The suit says the painkiller caused Serviss to suffering cardiac and respiratory arrest, leading to her death on April 9.

Serviss seeks damages of more than $50,000. She is represented by attorney Richard J. Murphy of Costello, McMahon, Burke & Murphy in Chicago.
