CHICAGO–A La Grange couple is suing the maker of their household dishwasher, alleging defects they say caused a house fire.

John Nisivaco and his wife, Colleen Fitzgerald, filed a lawsuit Nov. 20 in Cook County Circuit Court against BSH Home Appliances Corp., alleging property damage and product liability.

According to the complaint, the home the Nisivacos owned in La Grange was heavily damaged by a fire Jan. 6 that started in dishwasher in the couple’s kitchen. The suit says the dishwasher, installed the same day of the fire, contained manufacturing defects that started the blaze.

The lawsuit says the fire caused "severe and extensive damage" to the Nisivaco's property.

The Nisivacos seeks a jury trial, damages in excess of $200,000, plus litigation costs. They are represented by attorneys Paul T. Falk and Bradley M. Arnold of Falk Metz in Chicago.

Cook County Circuit Court Case number 2015-L011881.
