Chicago couple alleges malpractice against Northwestern Hospital

Stop stroke

CHICAGO–A Cook County couple is suing a Chicago hospital and two doctors, alleging an overnight delay of an MRI for the husband’s apparent stroke left him with right side paralysis.

Ken and Collette Khuans filed a lawsuit Nov. 18 in Cook County Circuit Court against Northwestern Memorial Hospital, Dr. William P. Nobis and Dr. Sri Preethi Vagvala, alleging medical malpractice.

According to the complaint, on Dec. 28, 2013, Ken Khuans came to the emergency room at Northwestern Memorial with weakness of the left leg, an unsteady gait, and tremors and weakness in other extremities. An MRI that was ordered soon after admission was delayed to the following day, the suit says, and the defendants failed to identify Khuans' condition and order swift, appropriate treatment.

As a result, the lawsuit states, the plaintiff suffered injuries of a personal and financial nature, including right side hemiplegia.

The Khuans seek a jury trial and  damages of more than $50,000. They are represented by attorney Mark R. McKenna of Hurley McKenna & Mertz in Chicago.

Cook County Circuit Court Case number 2015-L011794.
