Mother blames city of Chicago for son's traffic chase death

Speed chase

CHICAGO – A Cook County woman is suing Chicago, alleging negligence for her son’s death during a high-speed chase.

Deborah Branch Bear, special administrator of the estate of Kirk Branch, filed a lawsuit Dec. 9 in Cook County Circuit Court against the city of Chicago, alleging liability for personal injury.

According to the complaint, on Jan. 25, Kirk Branch apparently violated a traffic law while driving in Chicago. As Chicago police officers chased him at high speeds of more than 90 m.p.h., the suit says, Branch lost control of the vehicle, crashing into a light pole. He later died of his injuries.

Bear seeks damages in excess of $50,000, plus litigation costs. She is represented by attorney Jeffrey Deutschman of Deutschman & Associates P.C. in Chicago.

Cook County Circuit Court Case number 2015-L012424.
