CHICAGO – A Cook County business is suing its former bookkeeper, alleging she embezzled more than $30,000 in corporate funds.
Image Fiction Inc. filed a lawsuit Dec. 15 in Cook County Circuit Court against Allison Byers, alleging theft and misappropriation of funds.
According to the complaint, Byers served for a year and a half as Image Fiction’s bookkeeper, acquiring access to the company’s accounting software, payroll records, and accounts receivable and payable. The suit says Byers, who was paid more than $60,000 in annual salary and benefits, began embezzling funds from the company in March 2014, only three months after joining the firm.
The plaintiff alleges Byers spent more than $30,000 on her personal expenses, charging them to Image Fiction’s credit cards. The suit says the expenses included meals, entertainment, clothing, an iPhone and other items.
The lawsuit also states Byers forged signatures and gave herself raises and bonuses from company funds.
Image Fiction seeks damages in of more than $50,000. It is represented by attorney John F. Sullivan of Crowley and Lamb PC in Chicago.
