Patient alleges Vista Memorial misdiagnosed spinal infection

Back pain

CHICAGO – A Cook County woman is suing a number of health care providers, alleging her doctors’ misdiagnosis of a severe spinal infection led to permanent injury.

Melissa Mowery filed a lawsuit Dec. 22 in Cook County Circuit Court against Waukegan Illinois Hospital Company LLC, Vista Emergency Department Lindenhurst, Vista Health System, Vista Memorial Hospital, Emcare Corp., Dr. Calvin Terrell and Dr. Sydney Scheneidman, alleging medical malpractice.

According to the complaint, on Aug. 7, 2014, Mowery came to the Vista emergency department with severe chest and back pain. After the defendants sent her home with a diagnosis of unspecified musculoskeletal pain, the suit says, Mowery later learned she had a spinal infection.

As a result of the delayed diagnosis, the plaintiff alleges she suffered severe, permanently disabling injuries and has spent large sums on medical care.

Mowery seeks damages of more than $50,000. She is represented by attorney Stephen D. Phillips of the Phillips Law Offices in Chicago.
