CHICAGO – A Cook County man is suing an Orland Park hospital and a surgeon, alleging a surgical mistake occurred during a gallbladder operation.

Alfred Matthews filed a lawsuit Dec. 23 in Cook County Circuit Court against Dr. James R. O’Donnell; Advocate Health and Hospitals Corp., doing business as Advocate Medical Group; and Advocate Health and Hospitals Corp., doing business as South Suburban Hospital; alleging medical malpractice.

According to the complaint, on Sept. 6, during a procedure to remove Matthews’ gallbladder, O’Donnell severed the patient’s common bile duct by mistake, and then failed to convert the laparoscopic surgery to an open procedure to repair the error.

The suit says the plaintiff has suffered physical and mental pain, was forced to undergo additional surgeries, and will owe for current and future treatment.

Matthews seeks a jury trial and damages of more than $50,000, plus litigation costs. He is represented by attorney Lawrence R. Kream of the Law Office of Lawrence R. Kream LLC in Chicago.
