CHICAGO – A Cook County woman is suing a Chicago Heights nursing care facility, alleging negligence caused her elderly mother’s death.

Roberta Kern, independent administrator of the estate of Charlene Kern, filed a lawsuit Dec. 28 in Cook County Circuit Court against Prairie Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center LLC, doing business as Prairie Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Chicago Heights, alleging negligence and wrongful death.

According to the complaint, Charlene Kern developed pressure ulcers on her heels, mid-back and trocanters (hip joints), as well as a Stage IV infected ulcer on her sacrum, during her residence at Prairie Manor in 2013 and 2014.

The suit says the injuries resulted from the facility’s negligence, and caused mental and physical deterioration that contributed to Kern’s death July 26, 2014 at the age of 86.

Roberta Kern seeks a jury trial and damages of more than $50,000, plus litigation costs. She is represented by attorney Matthew K. Henry of the Law Offices of Steven J. Malman & Associates PC in Chicago.
