CHICAGO – A Cook County woman is suing a Chicago hospital and two physicians, alleging their failure to treat her husband's heart condition cost him his life.
Jacqueline McHugh, independent administrator of the estate of Thomas F. McHugh Jr., filed a lawsuit Dec. 28 in Cook County Circuit Court against Swedish Covenant Hospital, Swedish Covenant Management Services Inc., doing business as Swedish Covenant Medical Group, Dr. Steven S. Kim, Dr. Han Ho Kim, and Kim & Mizera Surgical Associates SC, alleging medical malpractice and wrongful death.
According to the complaint, in September 2013, Thomas McHugh was undergoing chemotherapy, along with a cardiac catheterization, at the defendants’ facility at 5145 N. California Ave., Chicago. Although an echocardiogram discovered a problem with McHugh’s aortic valve Sept. 26, 2013, the suit says, no further tests were ordered by the defendants to assess his condition.
On Dec. 27, 2013, the lawsuit states, McHugh abruptly died after undergoing a sigmoidoscopy to examine his intestine. The suit says the defendants’ failure to address McHugh’s heart condition, as well as failure to properly perform the intestinal exam, lead to his death.
