Arthritis patient blames Wright Medical for hip implant failure

Hip replacement joint

CHICAGO – A Kendall County man is suing the the manufacturer of a hip implant, alleging it received and knowingly allowed implantation of the device despite its record of component failure.

Thomas Smith filed a lawsuit Jan. 4 in Cook County Circuit Court against Wright Medical Group Inc., Wright Medical Technology Inc. and Wright Medical Europe S.A., alleging product liability and breach of warranty.

According to the complaint, Smith suffered from hip arthritis before receiving the Wright Medical Profemur Total Hip System in both hips during separate surgeries in 2006. However, the suit says, by 2012 the right implant had failed, requiring installation of a replacement unit.

Smith alleges his doctors say although the left implant has not catastrophically failed, it has deteriorated and will also require replacement.

Smith seeks a jury trial and damages of more than $50,000. He is represented by attorneys Peter J. Flowers and Frank V. Cesarone of Meyers & Flowers LLC in Chicago.
