Pedestrian accuses Southgate Tower of negligence in slip-and-fall incident

Snowy sidewalk

CHICAGO – A Cook County woman is suing a Chicago high rise and its owners, alleging they failed to clear an icy sidewalk where she says she suffered injuries from a fall.

Karyn Montijo filed a lawsuit Jan. 5 in Cook County Circuit Court against Southgate Tower LLC, Southgate Property Management Inc., Blackrock Inc., Blackrock Realty Advisors Inc., Hiffman Shaffer Associates Inc. (doing business as Nai Hiffman) and Nai Hiffman Asset Management LLC, alleging negligence and premises liability.

According to the complaint, Montijo was injured Jan. 6, 2014, when she fell on an icy sidewalk at Southgate Tower. The suit says the defendants’ negligence led to an accumulation of water, ice and snow, resulting in the dangerous conditions at the property.

The plaintiff says she suffered cuts, bruises and other injuries that cost her large sums for medical care, as well as lost wages because she was unable to work.

Montijo seeks damages of more than $50,000, plus litigation costs. She is represented by attorney Carl S. Salvato of Salvato & O’Toole in Chicago.
