CHICAGO – A Cook County woman is suing Walgreens, alleging a pharmacist recommended two incompatible drugs, sending her into a coma with lingering loss of memory.
Madiline Hicks filed a lawsuit Dec. 31 in Cook County Circuit Court against Walgreen Co., Bond Drug Company of Illinois LLC and pharmacists Edward C. Chen, alleging personal injury liability.
According to the complaint, on Jan. 4, 2014, at the Walgreen's at 3148 S. 159th St., Markham, Hicks asked Chen for a recommendation for a sinus medication she could safely take with her anti-epilepsy prescription of Kepra. Chen, who had filled many of the plaintiff’s past prescriptions, told Hicks she could take Sudafed with it, the suit says.
However, the lawsuit says, the drugs are incompatible, causing her to lose consciousness and fall into a coma. The plaintiff alleges Chen and Walgreens violated their duties to provide her with sound medical advice.
Hicks seeks damages in excess of $50,000. She is represented by attorney Ashley M. Murray of O’Connor Law Firm Ltd. in Chicago.
