Patient blames St. Bernard Hospital, Reymar Clinic for bowel surgery complications

Operation underway

CHICAGO – A Cook County woman is suing doctors at St. Bernard Hospital and Reymar Clinic, alleging they mishandled two abdominal surgeries they performed, leaving her with ongoing complications.

Charlene Dixon filed a lawsuit Jan. 8 in Cook County Circuit Court against St. Bernard Hospital, Dr. Maria Bautista, Dr. Adolfo Maglaya, Reymar Clinic Health Care Inc. and Dr. Henry Pimentel, alleging medical malpractice.

According to the complaint, on Jan. 6. 2014, Dixon came to the emergency room of St. Bernard Hospital in Chicago with severe abdominal pain. Two days later, the suit says, the defendants diagnosed her with gastritis and a closed-loop small bowel obstruction, and after an operation to clear the bowel obstruction, the defendants sent her home.

Five days later, after she was readmitted with continuing severe abdominal pain, the suit says, Dixon underwent a second procedure to repair the bowel obstruction, suffered respiratory failure and ultimately was transferred to University of Chicago Hospital for additional treatment.

The suit alleges the doctors were careless and negligent in performing both bowel surgeries and treating her underlying condition, abdominal adhesions.

Dixon seeks a jury trial and damages of more than $50,000. She is represented by attorneys Mark P. Cogan and Thomas K. Prindable of Cogan & Power PC in Chicago.
