CHICAGO – A Cook County woman is suing doctors at a Hoffman Estates medical center, alleging they failed to monitor her son’s oxygen levels during a procedure, resulting in brain damage.

Ericka Lerma, as mother and next friend of Aidan Lerma (a minor), filed a lawsuit Jan. 20 in Cook County Circuit Court against St. Alexius Medical Centerin Hoffman Estates, alleging medical malpractice.

According to the complaint, when Aidan Lerma came to St. Alexius for a colostomy closure Nov. 12, 2014, staff failed to maintain his pulse oximetry levels above the doctor-ordered level of 93 percent. As a result, the suit says, Aidan suffered severe respiratory distress, causing permanent brain and motor deficits.
